Webhook

Also known as: Event callback, HTTP callback

An automated notification that one system sends to another when something happens—like a text alert for software. This capability is implemented by tools like Customer.io to enhance automation and efficiency.

Context

Webhooks make real-time automation possible. When someone pays via Stripe, a webhook notifies your CRM to mark them as a customer. When a form is submitted, a webhook alerts your Slack channel. Webhooks are more efficient than having systems check for updates constantly—they only fire when something actually happens.

Examples

  • 1Stripe sending payment confirmation webhooks to your system
  • 2Typeform triggering webhooks when forms are completed
  • 3Shopify alerting your fulfillment system when orders are placed
